What Does an Electronics Engineering Technician Do?

Are you a natural problem solver-someone who likes to identify and fix problems? Do you like working with your hands? If these qualities describe you, a career as an electronics engineering technician might be a great fit for you! But what does an electronics engineering technician do?

Electronics engineering technicians help engineers design and develop electrical and electronic equipment.[1] They use their hands-on skills to troubleshoot and repair electronic instruments and systems. They're also involved in manufacturing and deploying equipment for automation. Companies across many fields need trained technicians who understand the inner workings of modern technology.

Electronics engineering technicians are commonly tasked with the following:[2]

  • Design basic circuitry and draft sketches to clarify details of design documentation, under engineers' direction
  • Build prototypes from rough sketches or plans
  • Assemble, test, and maintain circuitry or electronic components according to engineering instructions, technical manuals, and knowledge of electronics
  • Adjust and replace defective circuitry and electronic components
  • Make parts, such as coils and terminal boards, by using bench lathes, drills, or other machine tools
