Oral health is imperative to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and part of having a healthy lifestyle is making sure you regularly visit the dentist for checkups. As dentists do their best to serve all patients, many offices rely upon dental assistants to work closely with hygienists and dentists to provide quality care for patients.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is expected to be an 18% growth within the field and 58,600 jobs will be added between 2014 and 2024, much faster than the national average for all occupations. By 2024, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry projects that over 14,000 people will be employed as dental assistants.
So, how does one get their start as a dental assistant, and what exactly does the job entail?
What do dental assistants do?
Dental assistants are the most versatile position in offices, as they can perform tasks ranging from greeting and checking patients in at the front desk to working hands-on with patients by readying them for procedures. Under the direction of a dentist, dental assistants work as part of team with dental hygienists to ensure the patient's experience at the office is positive. As dentists spend more time on advanced procedures, offices count on dental assistants to perform routine duties.
Where will you work?
While a majority of dental assistants will work in dental offices, a dental assisting diploma allows you to work in variety of settings with differing types of patients. With a diploma, dental assistants can work in offices for orthodontists, oral surgeons, or local health centers.
How to become a dental assistant?
Career education or trade schools like YTI Career Institute offer dental assisting programs that feature an accelerated format to train students for a career in under a year. While enrolled in the dental assisting program, students receive hands-on training in classrooms and labs that feature the same equipment and tools professionals are using in the field. Classes are taught by individuals who have formerly worked in the field.
As they approach graduation, students also complete an externship at local dental offices or clinics to receive real-world experience and on-the-job training.
