Often, students report that they learn best when lessons come from experiences outside of the classroom. YTI Career Institute offers real-world training for its students as part of the everyday curriculum to prepare students for the workforce.
One program making the most out of its opportunities for students to gain practical application of the skill set is the Computer Systems Specialist (CSS) program.
What can you do with a career as a Computer System Specialist?
Computer support specialists jobs are expected to grow 12% by 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics.
Students who graduate from the program can go on to careers as software development professionals, security systems analysts, or support specialist among other computer system positions. The career path also opens students to work in a variety of industries including government, healthcare, non-profit and finance. With an open-minded approach to learning, dedicated students have a chance to explore and work in these fields while enrolled at YTI.
Exploring all the options
The program offers a broad look at careers students can work towards in information technology, but provides ways for students to take a deeper dive into concentrations they feel most enthusiastic about.
To expose students to all areas of computer systems training, the class is heavily involved in diagnosing tech issues on-campus to utilize the students' capabilities and teach them practical problem-solving.
Students in the program also earn credit by completing an off-campus externship where they have the opportunity to gain experience in network operations centers (NOCs) or in other businesses that provide IT support or PC repair.
Some classes enable students to develop innovative endeavors. One such project was the Error 404 Arcade, an assignment that quickly became a passion project for the class . The project saw CSS students collaborate with YTI's Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) students to design and program a machine that allowed them to play classic video games like Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong.
In another project, the students organized a LAN party as a benefit for Honey's Raid (Raising Awareness in Dog Fighting). Prior to the event, students received hands-on training by wiring connections and preparing gaming systems for gamers to play multiplayer video games connected through a local area network (LAN).
