4 Soft Skills You Need as a Dental Assistant

Have you wondered what a career as a dental assistant is really like? On any given day, dental assistants will perform administrative and clerical work like greeting patients, scheduling their appointments and managing records and billing information. To be successful as a dental assistant, you need both concrete and soft skills. These soft skills will help you stay on task as a dental assistant:

Detail oriented
When helping dentists treat patients, there are certain rules and protocols that dental assistants must follow. They must also be fully familiar with what tasks they are permitted to complete as determined by their state's guidelines.

Interpersonal skills
A major role of a dental assistant is to interact with patients. They're expected to greet and converse with patients in a friendly manner. They often need to show sensitivity toward patients that might be experiencing pain.

Listening skills
Listening closely to patients and co-workers is an important quality of a dental assistant. They need to follow directions from a dentist or dental hygienist, so they can effectively interact with patients and perform tasks.

Organizational skills
An organized dental assistant can be a great asset to a dentist or dental hygienist. They should have the right tools prepared for a dentist or dental hygienist to use when treating patients. They also manage records and schedule appointments.
