03.26.19 | Criminal Justice Programs
Lined up in a single row of seats, you anxiously await your turn in the training exercise. You're up, and in a matter of seconds, orange liquid leaves a canister, covering your face with a thin coat of spray.
Your eyes immediately close, beginning to water and burn. As you inhale, gasping for breath, a cough erupts and your throat swells with pain, making it hard to breathe. You don't know it at the time, but your body's mucus membranes have become extremely inflamed in the nose, lung, mouth and eye regions. For a brief period, you feel completely disoriented.
Half an hour later, the symptoms begin to subside. You've officially endured a textbook reaction to pepper spray. You've also gotten through one of the most difficult, but insightful, training exercises.
Why Criminal Justice & First Response Training?
Whether you like helping others or you have a knack for keeping calm in stressful situations, criminal justice & first response training can prepare you for an entry-level job in private/public safety and first response sectors upon graduating. With proper training, you have the chance to make a difference in the community at large.
Program Overview: What to Expect
Students in YTI's Criminal Justice & First Response program learn about the responsibilities of first response and criminal justice agents, and graduates earn an Associate in Specialized Business degree. From crime scene collection and analysis to surveillance and self defense training, YTI students graduate with a deep understanding of real-life experiences. Students also learn the following:
As a fifth-term student in the Criminal Justice & First Response program, you glean firsthand knowledge of how OC (pepper) spray affects the body. And as difficult as this exercise may be, it provides students with invaluable knowledge about how pepper spray can be effectively be used as a self defense agent.
The YTI Difference
On the job, YTI training can be the difference between an extremely stressful situation and a manageable one. Consider the scenario of getting maced by an agressive attacker. Had you not undergone voluntary OC spray training, it's likely that you would panic and lose control during an encounter like this.
However, because you've gone through this training exercise, you know a few things that can make a world of difference.
This is the firsthand knowledge that a student has upon completing YTI training. And this is the knowledge that can save lives.
