How can I further clarify my career direction?
In addition to written resources, one of the most important methods of clarifying your career direction is to talk to people in the industry. Contact those in your career field, explain who you are, let them know you are making a career decision and ask them for a few minutes of their time. If possible arrange a face-to-face meeting, and be prepared with a list of questions to help you determine if this career focus fits what you are seeking. Sample questions include:
- What do you like most/least in your position?
- What are the key skills someone needs to be successful?
- What are the major changes you anticipate in the industry?
- How do I best prepare for a career in this industry?
- What types of activities should I participate in school to make me more marketable for this career?
- What advice do you wish someone had given you when you first started your career?
How can I increase my marketability and establish connections in the field?
In addition to informational interviews, other ways to develop contacts in the field include volunteering, shadowing someone in the career field of your interest, and taking an active part in professional associations.
Through the Externship program, York Technical Institute provides students with the opportunity of gaining hands-on experience in your chosen career field. Make the most of this opportunity by seeking the externship that will enable you to learn the most and put into practice the skills you have learned in school. Also, do not overlook the value of part-time employment. A related position while in school will help you to be more marketable once you finish your training.
Finally, throughout your training at YTI, the Career Services staff can assist you in finding career information and can help you to develop job search strategies to find a part-time job, externship or full time employment. Take advantage of seminars and individual appointments to help you get started in your new career.
