From finding part-time employment, writing resumes and cover letters, developing effective job search strategies, finding an externship or full time position, the Career Services Department is ready to assist you in reaching your career goals. The following services are available to students and recent graduates of YTI:

Career Seminars
A variety of seminars give students a strong foundation in developing effective job search strategies and creating written correspondence needed for obtaining employment. Contact the Career Services office (or look on the YTI Calendar) for a schedule of topics related to:

  • Presenting a Professional Image
  • Creating a Resume and Cover Letter
  • Job Search Strategies
  • Interview Preparation

Externships
Externships serve as an important part of the student's educational experience. An externship provides students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and apply the skills they have learned at YTI. Students can further develop skills; increase their marketability by participating in career related projects and gains contacts that will be useful to their future career development. Finally, some externship sites offer full-time positions to those externs who demonstrate their ability to do a job well.

YTI places a priority on its externship program. Career Services Specialists work to assist students in finding positions. To gain the most from an externship, students should remember to:

  • Start to look for positions at least three months prior to their anticipated start date.

  • Look for positions that allow for future growth and excellent learning opportunities not just externships that fulfill the minimum graduation requirements.

  • Be flexible, there are no perfect positions. The best learning position may not be in close proximity or may not be a paid position.

  • Work closely with Career Services Specialists to develop effective search strategies.

  • Approach your externship search as if it were a full-time job; over 60% of externships at YTI become permanent positions.

Employer Connections
To facilitate students' job search needs the Career Services Specialists have daily contact with employers. The following opportunities enable students to meet with employers or to make connections related to their area of study.

  • On and Off-campus interviews - Employers make ongoing requests to see resumes and meet with qualified YTI candidates. These interviews may occur at the employer site or at YTI. By actively working with a Career Services Specialist, you can be kept up-to-date about interview and employment opportunities.

  • Career Fairs - Each year a minimum of two Career Fairs are held with up to 70 employers attending each event. Career Fairs are a great way to learn about a company, make some employer contacts and obtain career information. Check with the Career Services office or YTI Calendar for Career Fair dates.

  • Employer presentations or corporate visits - While at YTI a number of employer site visits or classroom presentations are available to students. This is an excellent way for students to learn more about their chosen career field and make connections. Students should contact Faculty to learn about these opportunities and about getting involved with relevant professional associations.
